Michele Cocco was invited speaker at the Event:
“Osservare il Mare” (Sea Observatory) which took place on 20 May at Cruise Terminal in La Spezia Largo Fiorillo.
The event was focused on reserch reports concerning innovation on Ligurian Territory.
Research Centers, University and Enterprises has addressed the audience, mostly composed by La Spezia Scientific and Navy Research Community, on ocean and seas monitoring activity also oriented to new challenges and opportunities of technology developments.
The initiative was also the opportunity to adequately celebrate the European Day of the Sea, promoted by Eurpoean Commission since 2007 and celebrated on May 20 of every year to emphasize the fundamental role of Ocean and Seas in the global ecosystem.
Among many others distinguished speakers, Dr. Michele Cocco was illustrating interesting aspects of Edgelab activity on the Underwater Archeologic Heritage in the frame of the European Project “ARROWS”.

Edgelab’s Director Lavinio Gualdesi was invited as a lecturer at the Universidad de La Laguna (ULL) in Tenerife, Canary Island, Spain.
Dr. Gualdesi taught a module on “Studies of suitable materials at sea and oceanographic moorings” and a seminar entitled “Sensor platforms for ports” to an audience of young engineers from ULL attending the 2013-2014 Master’s Degree in “Port and Coastal Engineering Expertise” (Maestrìa Universitaria en Ingenierìa de Puertos y Costas por la Universidad de La Laguna de Las Palmas de Gran Canarias).
The Master was started in 2003, with Dr. Gualdesi collaborating from its inception thanks to a long lasting link with the Director of the Master, Dr. Jesus Cisneros Aguirre of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, who is also a scientific advisor of Edgelab and partner in several projects.
Normally only taking place at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, this year the Master has also been requested by the University of La laguna in St. Cruz de Tenerife.
Following the creation of this Master, the majority of the projects of coastal engineering are now held in the Canary Islands and very few are left to the mainland. On top of that, the Master generated more than five companies started by former students. More than 60% of attending student are working in ocean engineering related companies and also have strong relationships with the Port Authority of Las Palmas and Tenerife.

Oggi, durante il trasferimento della Nave Costa Concordia dall’Isola del Giglio a Genova per il previsto smantellamento dell’unità, Michele Cocco è stato intervistato all’Isola d’Elba da diversi giornali italiani (Rai 2, Repubblica, Il Secolo XIX, La nuova Ecologia – il giornale di Legambiente – e Controradio). Il Dott. Cocco ha illustrato un parere tecnico di Edgelab riguardo agli sversamenti di idrocarburi in mare e la questione del traffico marino nell’arcipelago toscano.
“L’area dell’arcipelago Toscano è un’area ad altissimo valore ambientale, ad alto livello di tutela che è pero’ soggetta ad un intenso traffico marittimo in quanto collo di bottiglia del Mar Tirreno. Occorrerebbe implementare un sistema attivo di controllo del traffico ovvero tenere sotto controllo diretto tutte le navi che attraversano la zona”.
Riguardo all’inquinamento, secondo Edgelab la vicenda della Costa Concordia non desta grande preoccupazione a livello ambientale, dato l’elevatissimo sistema di sicurezza studiato e calcolato per questo evento straordinario. “Quello che ci preoccupa di più è l’ordinaria amministrazione, cioè quello che avviene tutti i giorni. Attraverso quest’area passano circa 10 petroliere al giorno più un’importante numero di navi trasportanti carichi pericolosi tutti i giorni. Queste, purtroppo, non sono sottoposte ad un sistema diretto di controllo. Almeno in queste aree occorrerebbe implementarlo”.
Sollecitato sul contributo di Edgelab a riguardo il Dott. Cocco ha illustrato le tecnologie da noi offerte in campo di sensori anti inquinamento e piattaforme come boe oceanografiche e veicoli autonomi sottomarini.

On November 10 2014, our Technical Director – Lavinio Gualdesi – held a presentation during a one day Workshop of the ARROWS (Archaeological Robot Systems for the world’s seas) project in the framework of the 18th International Council of Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) General Assembly and Scientific Symposium 2014.
The workshop “In the field of robotic archaeology: Robotics and ICT for knowledge, protection, and management of Underwater Cultural Heritage” was attended by many international institutions, centers of research and companies.
